Questions, ideas or something not working? Email us at pip@unicornphonics.com. A real parent reads every message, usually within a couple of days.
Getting started
- Add a reader. The first time you open the app, type your child's first name (or a nickname) and pick a color for her unicorn. You can add more readers later in Grown-ups.
- Tap her unicorn to open Rainbow Mountain, then tap Let's go! for today's path: a listening game, reading, spelling and quick sight words, about 10 minutes in all.
- Play together. Sit with your child while she reads. At the end, you score each word: Got it, With help, or Not yet. Your scores decide which words come back, and when.
Common questions
How do I get into the grown-up area?
On the "Who's reading?" screen, press and hold Grown-ups for two seconds. A quick tap won't open it, so little fingers stay in the games.
When does the next vowel unlock?
When every word in the current vowel has a "Got it", and most of them have a "Got it" on three different days. If she's stuck, she keeps practicing the same words until she's ready. Each reader's Progress page (in Grown-ups) shows what's left. To move at your own pace, turn on "Unlock all vowels and books" there.
We stopped before scoring. Is the session lost?
No. Unscored words wait in Grown-ups under "Score N words" until you score them.
Why doesn't the app say each letter sound?
On purpose. The letters light up silently and your child says the sounds herself, then Pip reads the whole word. Saying the sounds out loud is how blending is learned.
Where is my child's progress stored?
Only on your iPad. There's no account, and nothing is sent to us. Deleting the app deletes all its data. See our privacy policy.
The sound is off.
Check the iPad's volume buttons. The app plays sound even with the silent switch on.
